The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) brings together four of the most innovative and enterprising universities in Australia: University of Technology Sydney, RMIT University, University of South Australia and Curtin University.
The ATN is recognised as a global leader of a new generation of universities focused on industry collaboration, real-world research with real-world impact and produce work-ready graduates to become global thinkers in business and the community.
ATN is partnering with Astronaut Technologies to provide a platform for PhD candidates to introduce themselves and their proposed research through a three minute online video Q&A session. We were inspired to combine the principles of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, with the task of finding research supervision for aspiring PhD candidates.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is a global competition founded by the University of Queensland. It aims to cultivate students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
These three minutes of video Q&A responses aims to provide candidates with an opportunity to present information about themselves and their proposed research to an audience of prospective supervisors throughout the ATN. The video format will enable supervisors to get a more authentic sense of candidates and their proposed research, and it will enable candidates to focus on effectively communicating their research with presentation skills that get noticed.
You will have every opportunity to thoroughly prepare and research before you get started, and we have even produced an exemplar video to give you some idea of the possible style content of your responses. After you have finished, you will be able to forward a link of your individual profile to prospective supervisors. Your profile will also be available to potential supervisors throughout the ATN who may contact you.
The Q&A session has the following three sections:
Question One (30 seconds)
Firstly, please introduce yourself and your current work position.
Question Two (1:00min)
Tell us about your academic background and an overview of any past research (Masters dissertation, ongoing research, publications etc).
Question Three ( 2:00 mins )
Tell us about your proposed PhD research, and include some details about the research context, any research questions you propose, proposed methods, and the significance of the research.
